How Wheat Works

Thursday November 5, 2009
The Wheat Foods Council now has an educational, online program called How Wheat Works. This program teaches consumers about wheat, from the farm to the table. Consumers will learn about the 6 classes of wheat and they will have the option of planting a virtual hard wheat, soft wheat, or durum field. What's more, for each person that completes the program, the Wheat Foods Council will donate 2 pounds of flour to Operation Homefront. Not only will you get to learn more about wheat, you will be helping U.S. troops and their families during their time of need.

Four Loaf White Bread

Monday November 2, 2009

It's almost Thanksgiving, do you know what you'll be baking to take to the big family dinner? Four loaf white bread is the most basic, large batch, white bread you can make. The loaves taste just as good cool as they do fresh out of the oven. They also make delicious bread stuffing.

Preparing Fresh Pumpkins for Baking

Happy Halloween, All Hallows, Autumn, and Samhain! I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat night, and, when it's all over, don't forget to save your fresh pumpkins for baking into delicious breads.

Salted Beer Knots

Thursday October 29, 2009
It was a typical chilly day, and I could hear all the neighbors cheering for their favorite teams while sitting in their cozy homes. I don't watch sports, but their enthusiasm took me to the kitchen where I created this delicious recipe for salted beer knots.

Orange Tube Pan Bread

Thursday October 22, 2009
I find that I come up with my best recipes when my kitchen cupboards are down to odds and ends. Orange tube pan bread was made to use up a lone orange that was sitting on the kitchen table. The bread turned out delicious. It's perfect for family dessert and it's still not too sweet for breakfast.

Sally Lunn Muffins

Wednesday October 21, 2009
I love the taste of Sally Lunn bread, but I also love how easy muffins are to make. My Sally Lunn muffins were the perfect answer to my needs. They are great breakfast muffins and can be served with eggs and sausage to make a fantastic country breakfast. For dinner, these muffins go great with a ham steak dinner.

French Rolls

Wednesday October 14, 2009
While I love the traditional breads of France, I've almost always found the recipes too complex and requiring constant misting or the recipes are for large batches. Since many of these breads are made without milk, the shelf life of the bread is 24 hrs. The bread becomes stale by the next day. With my french rolls, petits pains, I kept the tradition of letting the bread dough rise 4 times to develop the flavor, but I took out the misting process and reduced the amount of rolls down to 12 so that they could be eaten in one day. Leftover rolls are toasted in the morning to hide the staleness.

Sunflower Seed Gourmet Bread Mix

Tuesday October 13, 2009
When my schedule gets busy, bread mixes come in handy. Sunflower Seed Gourmet Bread Mix, made by The J.B. Dough company, is so easy to make that my 14-year-ol daughter was able to quickly mix up the dough, set it to rise, and bake it. It was wonderful not having to bake bread for dinner that night.
