Irish soda bread is very easy to make. There is little preparation, no rising time, and it only takes 35 minutes to bake. This recipe makes a small, round loaf of Irish soda bread. It’s perfect for a small family dinner of 4 to 5 people, depending on serving size.

Yield: 1 small round loaf

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 35 minutes

Total Time: 45 minutes

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp plus 1 tsp sugar, divided
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 3 Tbsp butter, chilled
  • 1-1/2 Tbsp caraway seeds
  • 1 cup dark raisins
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 Tbsp melted butter

  1. In large bowl, add flour, 3 Tbsp sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Mix. Cut in chilled butter until mixture looks like fine crumbs. Mix in caraway seeds and raisins. Slowly mix and add just enough buttermilk until flour is damp.

  2. Grease baking sheet. Shape dough into a ball, place on baking sheet, and pat dough down gently to make a 3-inch deep, round loaf. Using a sharp knife, cut a 1/2-inch deep cross on the dough top. Smother loaf with melted butter and sprinkle with 1 tsp. sugar.

  3. Bake at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes or until golden and baked through. Serve warm with butter.
