Homemade dinner rolls bring a lot of comfort to a meal. You can prepare them ahead of time and serve them warm. Afterwards, you can use the small rolls to make ham and cheese sandwiches for lunches and even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

These delicious dinner rolls are very easy to make and are perfect for beginners. The dough is sweetened with honey, giving the rolls a yummy flavor that goes well with most dinners.

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp yeast (active dry)
  • 3/4 cup water (warm, 95 to 110 degrees F)
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp butter (or margarine, softened)
  • 1 medium egg
  • 2 1/2 cups flour (bread)

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. In medium bowl, add yeast and water. Stir until yeast is dissolved. Stir in honey, salt, butter, and egg. Add 2 cups flour. Mix well. Continue to add enough flour until dough chases the spoon around the bowl. Turn dough out onto floured table. Knead dough for 8 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until a smooth, elastic dough is formed. Place dough in greased medium bowl and flip dough over so that the top is also lightly greased. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rise for 1 hour in a warm, draft-free place.

  3. Punch down dough. Turn dough out and knead for 5 minutes. Divide dough into 10 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. Place rolls in greased 9-inch round pan. Cover with clean kitchen towel and let rise for 45 minutes or until doubled in a warm, draft-free place.

  4. Bake at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes or until buns are golden brown. Turn out. Let cool on rack.

Bread Baking Tips

  • Learn how to make swirl rolls with these pictured instructions.
  • Keep yeast stored in an airtight container and in the refrigerator. Heat, moisture, and air kills the yeast and prevents bread dough from rising.
  • To keep the rolls soft, store them in a plastic bag.
  • Store flour properly to keep it from spoiling.
  • Bread flour has a higher amount of gluten than all-purpose flour. This means that bread made with bread flour will rise higher than bread made with all-purpose flour. You can make your own bread flour by adding 1-1/2 teaspoons gluten to each cup of all-purpose flour you use in your bread recipe.
  • Add a half cup of raisins or dried cranberries to the bread dough for extra sweetness.
  • You can omit the egg in this recipe and replace it with 1/4 cup water.
  • Egg substitute can be used in place of the egg.
